Ready for lessons?

Below are the prerequisites for various instruments.

Instrument Prerequisites

Piano

The piano is the basic instrument especially for young children six and under just starting music lessons. Before beginning lessons the child needs to be able to count to 10 and know their ABC’s. A piano with weighted keys works best for lessons but any kind of keyboard that has at least 67 keys will also work.

Guitar
The best age to begin guitar lessons depends on the student. They have to be able to hold the guitar and their fingers need to be strong enough to have correct placement on the finger board.

Voice
When a student is younger than 10 a teacher usually incorporates basic keyboard skills to help with theory and fundamentals; ages 10 and up, the student would be ready for more in-depth lessons. A piano or keyboard is required which is used for warm-ups, accompanying the student, etc.

Percussion
The best age for a student to start drums is between 8 and 10. They need to be able to comfortably reach each drum with their hands and touch the floor pedals with their feet. If a student is too young to start on drums, starting with piano lessons would allow them to prepare for future percussion lessons.

Brass
Instruments that are classified as brass are: Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba and French Horn. The best age to start a brass instrument is usually 8 years or older. Starting age depends on the size and weight of the instrument and the required breath support and lung capacity needed for the chosen instrument.

Woodwinds
Instruments that are classified as woodwinds are: Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Oboe, and Bassoon.Like brass instruments, the best age to start a woodwind instrument is usually 8 years or older. Starting age depends on the size and weight of the instrument and the required breath support and lung capacity needed for the chosen instrument.

Strings
Instruments that are classified as strings are: Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. For the violin, as for taking piano lessons, one needs to be able to count to ten and know their ABCs. This is usually around the age of 5 years old. For the Viola, Cello and Double Bass, due to the size of the instrument and physical strength required, 7-8 years of age is recommended.
